Christmas Inspiration

Christmas is fast approaching and without doubt my favourite time of the year and with all that sparkle, glitter and fairly lights it’s hard not to be inspired when decorating your wedding or party venue. Christmas for me is the ultimate Wedding theme, it has it challenges of course, Santa’s Grotto is not really a good look for a wedding, but with the right amount of glitter, subtle Christmas decorations, and the right colour scheme it can look just beautiful

With a Christmas theme any colour scheme works, from the traditional red and gold to the modern purples and pinks or the more delicate silver and white, using little touches to add that subtle Christmas touch can really wow your guests throughout your day.

Coloured Baubles are a fantastic way to add colour and texture, either on a Christmas tree itself, or when creating a centre piece, hanging from a Wishing Tree or even personalise and give as favours to your guests.

The Proposal

Chris proposed to Joanna on one knee with a stunning platinum three stone diamond ring at the top of the London eye at sunset, celebrating with champagne.

The Bridal Gown

Joanna brought her beautiful Ivory strapless A line Jade Daniels gown, adorned with sequins from the National Wedding Show at the NEC Birmingham. Angelic Weddings accompanied Joanna and together they found the gown reduced from £1250 to £250 along with a stunning handmade tiara from Tigar Lillie. Joanna completed her outfit with Ivory peep toe shows from Monsoon, diamond earrings borrowed from her Mum, a pearl bracelet from Javelin, pretty light blue toe nail polish for her ‘Something Blue’ and a beautiful hand tied posy of cream roses with diamantes’ by Passion Flower of Sudbury.  

Lara Coad in Long Melford Suffolk was on hand for all the dress alterations and last minute touches.

Attendants

Some brilliant bargains were found on the high street, the champagne coloured bridesmaid’s dresses came from BHS which co-ordinated beautifully with stunning pearl hairpieces from Claire’s Accessories and little Lauren’s dress was from John Lewis. The groomswear was from Moss Bros, they all looked very handsome in traditional long black jackets, cream/burgundy cravats and cream waistcoats.

The Big Day    

The venue chosen was the stunning Hintlesham Hall near Ipswich, a magnificent 16th century grade 1 listed country house set in beautiful mature landscaped gardens and surrounded by 175 acres of rolling Suffolk countryside.

The bride arrived in style in a stunning white stretched limo accompanied by her bridesmaids, Mum and Dad and daughter Lauren, with champagne and music, a truly lovely way for the bride to arrive for her big day.

After the ceremony photos were taken on the wonderful grounds, with Canapés and Pimms served.

Guests enjoyed a traditional three course breakfast including breast & thigh of Guinea Fowl with a mixed Herb Sauce and tangy lime tart with fresh raspberries.

The evening reception was held at Hintlesham Golf Club where a delightful finger buffet was served, guests danced the night away with Andy Betts Disco.

Angelic Weddings was on hand to provide the finishes touches, guests received Jam Jar Favours filled with Chocolates (Footballs for the gents and Gold Balls for the Ladies), finished with a handmade tag thanking guests for attending, they were personalised doubling as place settings. Tables were named after the Grooms favourite Manchester United players, Angelic Weddings created table’s names with photos and a synopsis of each player. Passion Flower of Sudbury decorated each table with red petals and tall centre piece vases filled with red roses.

The Cake

 Jane Felton’s three tier ivory cake decorated with red roses and gold ribbon, a combination of traditional fruit, chocolate and lemon drizzle, totally delicious.

The Honeymoon

Joanna and Chris enjoyed a 2 week stay at the Atlantica Imperial Beach Resort in Kolymbia, Rhodes in Greece.

“Quiz sheets with questions about the couple on each table, such a great way to encourage guests to chat amongst themselves and break the ice . The answers were read out by the groom and best man in comedy fashion, after the deserts and the winning table received a round of drinks”.

“Jugs of tap water can save a lot, also serving sparkling wine rather than champagne. When preparing numbers for the evening buffet just cater for the evening guests only, most would have eaten anyway”.

• Get organised – Produce a time line and put points in your diary as to when you have to have things done by or when suppliers need paying etc
• Decide on your budget and stick to it, try not to get in to debt or go over budget if you can, this will just add to the stress
• Photography, Catering and Venue are in my opinion the three key areas to a successful wedding, try to get the best that you can afford in these three areas
• Research your suppliers thoroughly and spend time checking them out
• Make sure you leave plenty of time to find your dress, order it and for alterations to be done
• Try to order all your stationery at once because you may get discounts for bulk orders.     This also ensures that all the stationery will match and co-ordinate
• Never have the Hen or Stag do’s the night before the wedding
• Consider Save the Date Cards, these are normally given 12 months before the wedding and give guests advance notice so they can make sure they keep your date free
• Consider adding RSVP cards with your invitations and pending budget enclose a stamped addresses envelope for speedy responses. This helps with numbers for caterers and other suppliers and you can keep on top of your budget
• An information sheet/pack included in your invitations is a must, especially for guests who do not live in the area. These can provide directions to the venue, a map of the area, local hotels, B&B’s, Taxi firms, dress code, timings, menu choice (if you are having this), very useful for your guests and will be much appreciated and will also save you receiving lots of questions before the big day
• Give great thought about who you choose to be part of your wedding/bridal party. The best man and chief bridesmaid are very important roles which can have a big impact on both your stress levels and the success of the day, someone who is known for their reliability, punctuality and level-headedness
• Delegate jobs to appropriate family and friends you trust, but give them plenty of notice and make sure they understand their role completely. Lists are a very good way of doing this; provide a bullet point list to all members of your wedding party so they know exactly what their roles are. This will also prevent questions to you on the morning of the wedding
• If your venue does not have one included, hire a wedding co-ordinator or toastmaster to help your day run smoothly
• Consider your guests after the ceremony and whilst the photos are being taken, this can take a while, an aperitif of some kind, pending budget, can be anything from Buzz Fizz to Champagne, Canapés are also welcomed especially if the wedding breakfast is not until later in the afternoon
• Remember to cater for those people with special dietary requirement, use RSVP cards to gather important information like this
• Spend time over your seating plan, there is nothing better than seeing all your guests chatting, laughing and having a good time
• If there are a number of children attending it would be wise to invest in a crèche facility or children’s table with activities to keep them entertained for example during the speeches
• All speeches should be will prepared and rehearsed
• Encourage guests to make sure they sign the guest’s book by mentioning it in the speeches or delegating this to a bridesmaid or usher
• Any Family ‘issues’ need to be dealt with early on and delegated to a member of the wedding party so you can relax on your special day
• Post Boxes are great at weddings, many guests come armed with cards with vouchers enclosed, even cash, this is a great way to safely keep everything in place
• If you are having a DJ, ask whether they can provide back ground music as well during the drinks reception and wedding breakfast, music can really add to the atmosphere and ambiance
• If you are providing favours, make sure your guests know they can take them home
• Try to think of ways to involve and include your guests in the day
• Have a quiet room where people can go and chat if they want to away from the music/band etc
• Send out thank you cards in a timely manner and make sure you keep a list of who has given you each present.

There will always be an element of compromise and here are some practical tips on how to have the day you have always wanted to fit your budget.

• Consider fewer guests at the ceremony and wedding breakfast and more in the evening.
• Change the date of the wedding to ‘Off Peak Season’ or consider a mid week wedding
• Consider getting married later in the day and providing one meal for one set of guests.
• Use seasonal flowers, for example Tulips in spring, Sweet Pea’s for summer, and the all year round blooms like Roses and Gerbera’s
• Purchase flowers directly from a market or wholesaler
• Reusing flower displays from the ceremony location to the reception
• Using more white flowers than coloured, and adding more foliage
• Use local florists and ones who work from home who will have fewer overheads and should be more economical
• Re-use the bridesmaid’s bouquets as centre pieces
• Consider having silk flowers
• Approach a music school/college, see whether there are any possible students who want to gain more experience
• Utilise talented friends who can play instruments or sing
• Use a sound system and I-pod instead of a DJ
• Consider Buffet, Hog Roast, Self Service, and Hot Canapés instead or a tradional sit down wedding breakfast
• Doubling up the wedding cake and serve as desert
• Have a friend or family member make the cake
• Have cup cakes instead of a cake and use them as favours
• Decorate a plain iced cake yourself
• Pick up the cake instead of paying for delivery
• Have an afternoon tea party theme, cut Sandwiches, fresh cream cakes etc rather than a wedding breakfast
• Have a trip to France and buy your own wine in bulk/wholesale (check though that your venue does not charge a corkage fee)
• Consider sparkling wines, Buzz Fizz etc rather than Champagne
• Have a PayPal account instead of a gift list
• Hand deliver invitations and save on postage
• Have a photographer at the ceremony only and have guests take photos for you at the reception
• Do not have favours, guests will understand

There are three main  important things to consider when you first start looking for a dress, the first is  budget then the type/feel of your wedding and of course your body shape. See below some practical advise that should help you find ‘the one’.

• Think about the bouquet you would like and if it will contrast nicely with the dress
• Do not leave the purchase to late, leaving yourself not enough time for alterations
• Think about the colour and tone of the dress – to make your skin glow
• The dress should make you feel totally relaxed when wearing it
• The dress should express your personality as well as looking wonderful
• Choose a reputable shop or designer you feel confident with
• Consider your overall ‘look’ and think about your hair style, jewellery, head pieces etc
• What time of year is the wedding

Ball Gown

(Lady Diana Spender, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly)

This is the ultimate Cinderella dress and can be a one-piece dress or a separate bodice and skirt; it skims the floor with petticoats or hoops to give the skirt its fullness.

This style is wonderful if you are tall and slim, or medium height and tend towards a pear shape as you can emphasise the waist and disguise broader hips with a full skirt.

Using accessories such as long opera gloves, high tiara’s, and higher shoes emphasis a lean silhouette and add drama to the overall look.

A ball gown is perfect with a train and with the fullness of this style of dress, this will just add to its impact and what a grand statement it could make. Consider though whether you would like the train detachable, this may be a good option especially when it comes to the evening reception and all that dancing.

A-Line

(Jennifer Lopez, Audrey Hepburn)

This style has a fitted bodice and the skirt is ‘A’ shaped and can vary in degree of flare.

This style suits most shapes and has been the most popular dress style of the 21^st century to date.

This style is elongating on a petite frame, and the waist emphasis can help define a shapely figure. Make sure you have the dress cut to proportion your body correctly.

This style is very versatile can be a full length sweeping skirt to a shorter prom skirt, different colours and textures of bodice can be used for a more dramatic look.

Princess Line

(Royal Princess Elizabeth II, Carmen Electra)

Similar to the A-Line but the empire is cut so it flows unbroken from top to bottom in to vertical panels creating a clean, minimal and slimming style.

This style will suit most body shapes and height’s, this style is uncluttered and simple, lending itself to be a very flattering shape.

Empire Line

(Kate Winslet, Liv Tyler, Emily Mortimer)

The Empire line has a raised waistline cut beneath the bust with a full dress.

Suitable for most shapes, the Empire has a vintage feel to it with its period style gathered to the bust with sheer caped sleeves. With its high waist, this style is particularly flattering for a small bust, short legs or pear shaped figure.

This is also an excellent choice for pregnant brides as the lack of waist makes it quite roomy.

Column/Straight

(Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon – The Queen Mother)

This is a slim fitted style, it can be constructed with a built in corseted bodice.

Flattering for tall, slim or petite frames as the slim profile skims the body’s curves.

It can vary in length from short to floor sweeping gowns.

Mermaid and Fishtail

(Sophie Rhys-Jones, Denise Richards, Anne Heche)

Usually associated with the ‘Bias Cut’, you don’t need to be tall but you do need to be slim to carry this style off.

The mermaid dress is typically figure hugging to the knee, then flares out to the hem.

2010 is subtle and sophisticated!

Winter and spring is colours of red, mocha and sage where as summer colours are platinum, champagne with pale yellows or corals

Monochrome is also very popualr, add a third colour for instant impact like cerise pink or bright yellow, great for a marquee or barn wedding

Ostrich Feather Displays

Ostrich Feather displays, wow you guests with big bold displays in tall tower vases, they really make an impact and if you hire them there will be no need to worry about them afterwards

Balloon displays in your chosen colour scheme can add impact and be very pretty whilst being very economical, great for children to take home with them doubling up as favours

Sweets Table

Jars of sweets/ having a sweets table with a little sign saying ‘Help Yourself’, is fun and different to the tradition individual favour given to guests

Mirrors

Mirrors can make such an impact, use them on the tables, as a table plan, even to serve the canapés with, reflection of the lights, candles etc add to the atmosphere and look beautiful

Wishing Tree

A fantastic and very different alternative to the tradional guest book, originally a Dutch tradition, guest make a wish for the couple on a tag and then tie to the tree

Photo Frames

The wedding is after all a celebration of the couples love and their life together so far, a display of photo albums and photo frames of the couple for guests to browse through during the drinks reception is a lovely touch

Table Names

It’s becoming increasingly common for couples to steer away from table numbers and theme their wedding tables instead. A big trend is to name tables after places the couple have been too on holiday or theme with a particular mutual interest of theirs. This is a great talking point for guests
