Wedding Flowers

Wedding Flowers

Wedding Flowers have always been used for decoration at weddings.

Some people choose flowers at their wedding based on symbolic meaning, for example:

Orange blossom ~ purity

Azaleas ~ temperance

Roses ~ love

Snowdrops ~ hope

Red and white flowers are avoided by the superstitious because they stand for blood and bandages.

The groom’s buttonhole is said to be a vestige of the time when a Knight would wear his Lady’s colours to display his love.

Seasonal flowers

Spring: Freesia, Lily of the Valley, Sweet Pea

Summer: Peony, Sunflower, Carnation

Autumn: Aster, Passion Flower, Daisy

Winter: Snowdrop, Tulip, Pansy • All year: Rose, Lily

Types of bouquets

Round ~ Elegant, works well with most styles of dresses

Pageant ~ Modern, Calla Lilies and long stem roses work well

Cascade ~ or ‘Shower’, narrows to a point at the bottom

Nosegay ~ On trend, contains more greenery

Pomander ~ A ball suspended from a loop of ribbon

Posy ~ Small and round, great for flowers girls

The expert! Susan Jane May ~ Bespoke Wedding Flowers

Q: “What is the most important thing to remember when ordering your wedding flowers?”

A: “It’s important to choose your wedding dress first as it can have a huge influence on the style, colour and ‘feel’ of the bridal bouquet”. “Also, if a bride has a particular flower in mind it’s advisable to check when this flower will be in season. Many flowers that are seasonal here in the UK can be imported from abroad most months of the year but this will increase costs and availability can’t be guaranteed”.

Q: “How soon in the planning stage should a florist be contacted?”

A: “Normally six to nine months before the wedding but if a bride has a particular florist in mind then I’d recommend contacting them as soon as their date’s set and the venue’s booked to avoid disappointment.

On a budget? Consider:

Seasonal flowers

Alternative centre pieces i.e.: candelabras

Real Bride Special: Natasha & Nathan, June 2015

Real Bride Special: Natasha & Nathan, June 2015

ae474819-47fd-4924-af4d-68eb126cc4d2
Real bride Natasha chose Angelic Weddings to create her Invitations and some of her venue stationery for her big day back in June.

Cornflower blue, floral country garden chic with a bird theme was just stunning against the back drop of a quant Suffolk village church and rustic Suffolk barn.

45c1cf4e-925e-4e45-99f3-2f0515a0e233

Natasha chose ivory card, blue floral print, bird cage die cuts and cornflower blue satin ribbon. Deluxe wallet style invitations with inserts and matching RSVP cards along with venue stationery which included table names, menu cards, table plan and order of service cards.

Luggage tag style table names were tied to birdcage centrepieces, menu cards were mounted to artist board and stood on mini wooden easels, bespoke order of service cards carried through the birdcage design and the stunning table plan was designed around Natasha’s own large cream ornate picture frame.

Lovely touches surrounded the day including wooden crates, bunting, step ladder and our vintage suitcase which Natasha hired along with a bespoke CARDS sign we created to match her theme.

Natasha chose Ivory and blue flowers including Hydrangeas, Lilies and Gypsophila finishing off the country garden theme.

Q: Why did you chose your venue?

A: “We choose the venue because it was very close to my parents’ house and it had beautiful views of the countryside”.

Q: What was your favourite part of the day?

A: “Driving up the long drive to the venue in our horse and carriage just married”.

Q: What was your favourite item from Angelic Weddings?

A: “I loved all my stationery but my favourite was probably the table plan as it was just such a striking centre piece setting the whole theme of the wedding”.

Wedding Cakes

RAVENWOOD HALL _ samples -99

History

Cakes have been associated with weddings throughout history. The Romans shared cake during the wedding ceremony which was a plain confection made from wheat flour, salt and water.

In Britain early cakes were flat and round and contained fruit and nuts which symbolise fertility.

The shape of the modern three tiered iced cake is believed to have been inspired by the spire of Saint Bride’s Church in the City of London.

Superstitions & Rituals

It is said that unmarried guests who place a piece of wedding cake under their pillow before sleeping will increase their prospects of finding a partner and bridesmaids who do will dream of their future husbands.

Cutting the wedding cake is now part of the ritual celebrations at the reception. The couple make the first cut together to symbolise their shared future.

Gunfield2015-434

Ideas

Different flavoured tiers.

Using fake tiers to add height.

Coloured icing to match your theme.

Something different? Tiered cheese cake, tiered giant porkpie, macaroon tower, cheese cake or Crispy Cream donut tower.

On a budget?

Invite guests to make cakes/desserts and have a cake table bake off style!

Most supermarkets offer a lovely range of celebration cakes, Marks & Spencer’s being our particular favourite.

Use your cake as your dessert course for the Wedding Breakfast.

The Expert!

Q: “What is the most important thing to remember when ordering your wedding cake”?

A: “It’s your day, make your choice for you. The happiest newly married couples I have had the pleasure baking for are those who have no regrets”.
