Why a pre-wedding photo shoot is important

Why a pre-wedding photo shoot is important

So why is it a great idea or actually really important to have a pre-wedding photo shoot or engagement portrait session?

As a self confessed “I love having my photo taken” Bride I could not wait to have our photo shoot. Clothes were carefully selected, hair and make-up sorted and I even did the cheesy poses in the mirror (when no one was looking). Because to me it was an important process in the lead up to our wedding and also a great opportunity to have our photo taken as a couple (how many really good photos do you get taken when you’re together) and have some great snaps to frame. I thought that this was what it was all about and of course it was but looking back it was actually so much more.

Effectively it’s a trial run for your big day; it’s a lesson on body language, how to interact with your partner and how to build a relationship up with your photographer so they can get the best out of you and ready for your wedding day!

As someone who is normally very positive about their photo being taken, relaxed and actually enjoys the experience I found myself feeling quite nervous on the morning of the photo shoot. These are important shots; of course not as important as the wedding day itself, but even still you want them to be nice, artistic and something to show the grand kids. My partner was on the whole really looking forward to it as well but never having had his photo taken professionally before he was a little apprehensive also.

We chose a location local to where we live, somewhere we like going for walks, that was familiar and that was a great back drop.  Neal our photographer started by talking us through the process, what he was looking for and guided us into how to stand, where to look and how to engage with each other.

For the most part we didn’t even know when our photo was being taken as to start with there were a lot of long distance shots with us walking, talking, laughing and just chatting with each other.

The portrait sections of the shoot taught us how to stand in the most ‘flattering’ way next to each other, practice actual shots that we will be replicated on the big day and artistic shots where Neal used the back drop as props to make really interesting images.

For the first 30-45 minutes we were both, although enjoying it very much, still finding our feet with how to gaze at each other (lovingly) without laughing, standing in the ‘V’ shape so it was flattering for both of us and varying our smile, sultry and happy poses (this is all true…I promise).

And although I jest about it all it’s actually really important…why? Because for those 45 minutes before we started to get into the swing of things and actually taking some of the best photos of the whole session, we were effectively being coached. This is 45 minutes that will not be wasted on our wedding day going through this important ‘coaching’, it’s done, we know what we are doing and cannot wait to showcase what we have learned for our big day!

“These sessions aren’t essential, but they are actually useful for a few reasons really. Surprisingly, I meet many couples who, for whatever reason, tell me that at least one of them is really worried about having their picture taken. So, I can use the sessions to demonstrate that it isn’t a painful process at all! (not the way I work anyway!) We can have some fun and get to know each other a little better too, and by the time that the pictures are produced those worries have disappeared.

Also, the pictures produced from the session can, if desired, be used as part of your own unique wedding plans, i.e  for save the date cards, guest books, signing-boards etc. It’s a really personal touch to your wedding, and always gets a popular reaction.”

We came away we great, casual, fun and romantic photos that we will treasure, hang on the wall for years to come and will use in our guest book on our wedding day!

The whole experience was fantastic and will only make the process on our wedding day that more enjoyable and without a doubt much quicker, so we can get back to enjoying our big day with our guests.

Where to have it? Surprisingly NOT at your wedding venue, why? All you will be doing is replicating exactly the same shots as your wedding day but in casual clothes. Your photographer will already have worked at the venue and know where the best shots are, if not they will take a trip to visit the venue and check it out themselves. Use the pre wedding shoot to go somewhere meaningful to you, perhaps your local park, where you  first meet,  your favourite walk (as in our case) or a location like to seaside.

When to have it? I like the idea of having a contrasting season to your wedding, if you are getting married in high summer why not have a shoot in autumn or winter? It’s all about varying the photos you have with each other.

What to wear? Keep it simple and casual, again a nice contrast to the wedding day. Also think about your hair style, after our shoot I knew I wanted my hair up for our wedding day! My hair lovingly GHD’d curled was lost to the wind and weather!  Use props! I had a hat, loved it and it made the photos really interesting!

Thank you to Neal for a great experience, I can highly recommend a pre-wedding shoot to any newly engaged or about to be married couples! It may add to your budget a little but its worth it.

Happy planning

Our look at The Venue at Kersey Mill

Our look at The Venue at Kersey Mill

In January we popped and visited this stunning venue which is now under new management, has been fully refurbished and modernised, here is what we thought!

http://thevenueatkerseymill.co.uk/

The Venue is situated near the picturesque Suffolk village of Kersey and is easily found off the A1141 which is great for guests to find especially if you enclose a map or directions within your invitations.

As you arrive you are greeted with rolling lawns, fields and a beautiful bridge over a cute stream (perfect photo opportunities).

The stunning bridge over the stream – such a wonderful photo oppurtunity

There is ample parking round the front and extra around the back of the venue and as you approach the front area of the building there is a lovely decked area, great to greet people and guests as they arrive.

Everything looks very fresh and clean with a modern minimalist touch; nothing is too over done which is great as you can add whatever theme or colours you like, everything will work in this venue!

There is a bar area just inside the front entrance, a good size with comfy seating and perfect for pre wedding drinks and to greet your evening guests as they arrive later in the day.

The toilets are on the ground floor and have clearly been completely refurbished and redecorated. They are a good size and we noted that a bride even in the largest wedding dress will have plenty of room to manoeuvre. There are cute glitter toilet seats, high quality fixtures and a modern feminine feel, we really liked the toilets and thought they are very well done.

The main room is up stairs and as you walk through there are wooden beams and fairly lights, a modern light carpet and airy feel.  The room is big enough to be screened off having the top part for the ceremony.

Wedding Day -5
The main room all set up for a ceremony, note the lovely ornate screen in the background; where the bride will emerge from before walking down the isle.

The kiln room is stunning and fully licensed for a more intimate wedding ceremony; it’s also perfect for the evening buffet, candy buffet, photo booths and also as a snug, perfect for the older guests or those with young children.

It is also perfect for when the bride arrives, entering through the Kiln room from outside, unseen by guests and a wonderful back drop for photos with the father of the bride and bridesmaids.

The Kiln Room

After the ceremony there are plenty of options for your drinks reception, the Kiln room, bar area and outside decking; perfect for any weather situation.

The main room is transformed for your wedding breakfast and has a great ceiling height. Low or high centre piece arrangements work, there seems to be plenty of room to move around even at full capacity but still have that intimate feel. The bride and groom on a top table will be able to see all their guests and interact with them, which is important.

Wedding Day -307

There are clearly some stunning photo opportunities at the Venue, outside and inside, the bridge, stream, and front lawns in particular and the Kiln room inside has produced some of the best wedding images I have seen .

Gina & Jim, who are getting married there in August 2016, booked The Venue on how it made them feel.

“We found Kersey Mill homely with a cosy feel…and not to over bearing!  It’s an intimate venue”.

When we viewed the Venue www.jamieleesmithcatering.co.uk, who provide the in-house catering for the Venue, were providing tasting sessions for prospective clients and the smell for the kitchen was wonderful and although we did not taste any of the food myself it looked totally amazing and everyone looked very happy!

There is no overnight accommodation at the Venue but why not stay at the Bildeston Crown, there are also some lovely local B&B’s or rentable cottages nearby and of course the stunning Hintlesham Hall is only 15 minutes down the road.

The Venue provides various packages including All Inclusive, Party and a two course meal package, so lots of choice available to suit your budget and feel for your big day.

Becky and the team are so welcoming, accommodating and helpful, we highly recommend The Venue at Kersey,   for a fun, homely and modern wedding, a venue which you can really put your stamp on!

How to choose a photographer

How to choose a photographer

Aside from the venue one of the most important suppliers of a wedding is the photographer. It’s the one supplier you will certainly spend time with before, during and after the ceremony, majority of couples will spend between 10-20% of their overall budget on and who create life long memories of your big day. Therefore choosing the right photographer is important!

There are various types of photography used to capture weddings; the main ones are Traditional, Modern, Reportage or Artistic

Some photographers specialise in a certain type others can do a combination, which ever you choose I personally think a combination of two is a good choice. For example the traditional images of the posed bride and groom with loved ones and the whole group shot is great as it ensures all guests are captured, great to use for gifts as well. The more modern or reportage approach is wonderful for storytelling and capturing guests/couples in private personal moments when they do not know they are being photographed, sometimes these are the best ones.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing a photographer:

  • Do you like their style? Check through their portfolio and ask to see a slideshow of their work.
  • How experienced are they?
  • Are they familiar with your venue?
  • Are they creative? Does each wedding portfolio stand out as personal to that individual couple.
  • Do you like their personality? Remember you could spend at least 1-2 hours with them on your big day.
  • Have they a varied portfolio?
  • Do they offer various packages?

Tips:

  • Make a list of shots you would like, with whom and where.
  • Make sure your groomsmen also have a copy and liaise and help your photographer gather people when needed.
