Wedding Dress Shopping

Wedding Dress Shopping

Wedding Dress Shopping

The wedding dress is a truly important part of any bride’s day and purchasing one is an incredibly exciting time.

So after my experience shopping for my wedding dress, here are are some practical tips that I think might helpful.

Do not leave the purchase too late;  Leave yourself  enough time to save for a deposit and for alterations, start looking, if possible, around 16-18 months before the big day or as soon as you set a date.

Think about the colour and tone of the dress, chose one that suits you to make your skin glow and complement your hair colour.

The dress should make you feel totally relaxed when wearing it and not too heavy for you.

Take your wedding shoes with you or shoes with similar height to what you will be wearing on the big day.

Choose a reputable shop or designer you feel confident with and consider a local shop. It’s so much easier when going for fittings and paying deposits etc.

Consider your overall ‘look’ and think about your hair style, jewellery, head pieces etc when trying on and think about whether you will need a shrug, fur coat, umbrella, or veil.

The season, location and time of your wedding should be considered when choosing your dress.

Try on every style available so you know what suits you and what doesn’t, even the styles you don’t like on the hanger or in a magazine can look very different when tried on.

Listen to and take the advice from the bridal shop assistants, they are after all the experts.

Don’t settle on the first dress you try on, it’s not ‘always’ the one, trust me!

Don’t get hung up on bridal magazines and the latest trends and styles. Your dress should be about you and your style; a wedding dress should be timeless.

Lastly, just enjoy the moment; it’s the best shopping trip ever!!

Photography

Aside from the venue one of the most important suppliers of a wedding is the photographer. It’s the one supplier you will certainly spend time with before, during and after the ceremony, majority of couples will spend between 10-20% of their overall budget on and who create life long memories of your big day. Therefore choosing the right photographer is important!

There are various types of photography used to capture weddings; the main ones are Traditional, Modern, Reportage or Artistic

Some photographers specialise in a certain type others can do a combination, which ever you choose I personally think a combination of two is a good choice. For example the traditional images of the posed bride and groom with loved ones and the whole group shot is great as it ensures all guests are captured, great to use for gifts as well. The more modern or reportage approach is wonderful for storytelling and capturing guests/couples in private personal moments when they do not know they are being photographed, sometimes these are the best ones.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing a photographer:

Do you like their style? Check through their portfolio and ask to see a slideshow of their work.

How experienced are they?

Are they familiar with your venue?

Are they creative? Does each wedding portfolio stand out as personal to that individual couple.

Do you like their personality? Remember you could spend at least 1-2 hours with them on your big day.

Have they a varied portfolio?

Do they offer various packages?

Tips:

Make a list of shots you would like, with whom and where.

Make sure your groomsmen also have a copy and liaise and help your photographer gather people when needed.

How to find the perfect wedding venue

How to find the perfect wedding venue

Finding the perfect venue

Firstly consider whether you would like a religious ceremony and then a separate reception venue or a civil ceremony and reception all in one location.

If you are looking for a venue for both make sure it’s licensed to hold civil ceremonies and for the correct number of guests you want to invite.

If you would like a religious ceremony consider how far away the reception venue is and the travel time between the two locations. If it’s a large distance some couples lay on transport, a coach for example, especially if it’s a rural location. If your budget does not stretch to that, make sure a map and thorough directions are given to all guests when sending invitations.

Consider the size of the venue compared to how many guests you are looking to invite. Having a rough number before contacting venues is a good idea. Some venues have a minimum number required; others may be limited to numbers. If you are looking for an intimate wedding then a banqueting hall will probably not be quite right, on the other hand if you are planning a large number of guests, then a small venue may need extra structures adding, for example a marquee, which will increase your costs.

Attend as many open days or arrange visits as necessary and always go back again for a second viewing before putting down a deposit.

Many venues will hold your date for a little while; sometimes a week or so, giving you time to go over your budget etc

Most venues take bookings 2 or even 3 years in advance giving you more time to save.

Don’t forget all the other costs associated with a wedding, it’s easy to get carried away booking a lavish venue at the top of your budget but you may be left with less money to spend on other areas to compliment that venue.

Lastly: Have a good idea of your overall budget before viewing venues and if you are on a tight budget contact the venue for a rough price or download any wedding packs or brochures online before attending an open day or viewing.

You’re Engaged! Congratulations!

You're Engaged! Congratulations!

Congratulations you’re engaged

So the countdown begins towards your very special day marrying the partner you love and solidifying your relationship together.

Many have dreamed of their wedding day since they were little, some may have only started thinking about it once they have meet that special person, either way your wedding day will be at the forefront of your plans and day to day decision making for the foreseeable.

So what do you do now?

Firstly think about how long you want your engagement to be? The average engagement is around 18 months nowadays.

Then chat with your partner and family about what your ideal day looks like.

Then consider the following;

Season/Time of year

Location – immediate area/local, in the UK, or abroad

Size – Intimate or larger affair

What type of ceremony – religious, civil or humanist

Your main priorities

Budget

Who you would like to help you plan

Your wedding party, Bridesmaids, Best man, Ushers etc

Will you need a hired wedding planner or coordinator on the day

Any particular dates that are ideal or special too you

Theme, colour scheme, style and inspirations

Once you are ready to look at venues and booking a date try attending local wedding fairs and open days to gauge the type of venues available, local suppliers and costs.

Consider a subscription to a few wedding magazines, our favourites are You & Your Wedding Magazine and Wedding Ideas.

Create a scrap book and a folder or file to collect literature and magazine clippings.

Create a Pinterest board (remember to keep it ‘secret’) and pin any wedding ideas that inspire you. Remember not to get carried away with Pinterest, be realistic as many of the images are highly styled and extremely lavish and it may not be possible to replicate exactly, especially if you are on a budget.

Lastly; enjoy every minute of your engagement.

A ‘Fairytale’ Venue: Ravenwood Hall Hotel

A 'Fairytale' Venue: Ravenwood Hall Hotel

Ravenwood Hall Hotel is a grand 16th century Tudor hotel just outside of Bury St Edmunds, set in 7 acres of land with stunning gardens, pool, summer house and pavilion it provides everything you need for your perfect day.

RAVENWOOD HALL _ samples -213

Back in May we had the great honour of organising and designing a photo shoot at this wonderful venue, accompanied by some of the very best suppliers in the area.

RAVENWOOD HALL _ samples -14

The sun shone on our fairytale mock wedding showcasing everything Ravenwood Hall Hotel has to offer and at its very best; its versatility, welcoming feel and timeless appeal. Along with stunning work, displays and items supplied by a network of local wedding companies our models Lily and Chris had the best time and such fun posing as a happy couple on a wedding day! Our photographer Andrew Chambers and his wife Michelle were simply inundated with amazing photo opportunities and inspiration throughout the day.

The day was started with coffee and French pastries and then off the ‘Saxon Room’, one of 3 bridal suites Ravenwood has to offer, for make-up, hair and final touches.

We chose two beautiful dresses and quite a few lovely accessories all from Bury Bridal Rooms. A stunning organza ball gown by Ella Rosa, a backless lace mermaid by Kenneth Winston, a cathedral length veil which sparkled with diamante detailing, pearl and diamante comb/tiara and a bird cage veil.

Sharron from Elegant Hair & Beauty created two looks for our lovely model Lily; subtle elegance with the ball gown and cathedral length veil and modern chic to compliment the lace backless mermaid with bird cage veil.

Our ‘groom for the day’ Chris had two very fetching suits to wear both from Gerald Boughton; a grey 3 piece and a traditional tails with pin stripe trousers, accompanied by ivory and gold accessories.

Inside the Tudor House there is an ambulance of photo opportunities and beautiful backdrops be it the opulently decorated bedrooms, bar, snug area or quant tranquil dining rooms. Although grand, Ravenwood never feels imposing or over the top, just a welcoming warm, homely feel.

RAVENWOOD HALL _ samples -39

Ravenwoods versatility is no better shown then with their many options for your ceremony; an outside wedding under the summer house, an intimate get together in their dining room or a larger party in their timeless and vintage look pavilion, there is something for everyone.

RAVENWOOD HALL _ samples -69

The summer house is our particular favourite with its grapevine isle and garden back drop, it feels very intimate but can still seat 100 guests for your ceremony.

The pavilion looked stunning, all set up for a wedding breakfast, with our peaches and cream colour scheme and fairytale look but with that all important modern feel. Ravenwoods’ own Candelabras looked fabulous as centre pieces draped in pearls and accompanied by floral decorations from the English Rose Florist, stationery handmade by ourselves, Angelic Wedding & Events, and finished off with sashes, lace and floral detailing from Saxon Street Hire which looked superb teamed with Ravenwoods’ own chair covers.

Using peach and ivory tones we created place setting tags and drop pearl bird cage place-settings, menu cards displayed with shabby chic cup and saucers on vintage books and table numbers on artist board which stood on wooden easels. The overall look was finished with miniature glass jam jar favours filled with mints and drinks tokens placed in wine glasses. Matching table plan sections were mounted to our ornate mirror which looked stunning as a backdrop and worked very well with Ravenwoods’ own gold ornate easel.

Wedding Invitations

Wedding Invitations

Wedding Invitations

Wedding planning can be daunting with much focus placed on the small details. The design process starts with the invitations where the font, colours, RSVP dates, layout and wording are chosen. Invitations set the tone for the wedding giving guests their first glimpse of the colours and theme of the day.

Here is a guide and some tips for your invitations.

Formal or informal: This is mainly the wording and layout, for example words like ‘request the pleasure of the company of’ and ‘cordially invite’ are more formal where as ‘would like you to join them’ are less formal. It’s about personal preference.

For example, a formal layout would be

Mr & Mrs K J Chittock

request the pleasure of the company of

Miss E Stovell

to celebrate the marriage of their daughter

Sophie Victoria

to

Mr Marc Aaron Prescott

on Thursday 12th April 2012, 12 noon at

St Michaels & All Angels Church, Occold, Suffolk, IP23 7PD

followed by a reception and evening celebration

at Woodhall Manor, Sutton, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP12 3EG

RSVP by 12th February 2012

 An informal layout could be…

Richard &Pauline Cooper

would like

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

to join them to celebrate the marriage of their daughter

Sarah – Louise

with

Carl Anthony Michael Sturman

at St. Mary’s Church, Attleborough, NR17 2AH

on Saturday 27th July 2013 at 1pm

and afterwards at Barnham Broom Hotel, Golf &Spa,

Norwich, NR9 4DD

Hosting: Are the bride’s parents hosting or the bridal couple? Many couples are choosing to host themselves giving a less formal tone.

An example of how could word your invitation if you decide to host is…

Marcus& Lucy

request the company of

Ashley, Leanne & Zara

to celebrate their marriage at Wherstead Park,

The Street, Wherstead, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP9 2BJ

on Friday 18th April 2014 at 2pm

followed by a reception and evening celebration

 RSVP

By 20th December 2013

RSVP date and address: Who is collating the RSVP’s when they come in? The date chosen should allow enough time to get all responses in before your venue need final numbers. I suggest allowing an extra 3-4 weeks to chase stragglers.

Menu choices: Some venues allow a choice, if so send this information with your invitations and ask guests to choose their preferred option when they RSVP.

Guest poem or gift list information: Are you having a gift list with a store or are you asking for money? If it’s the latter a nice poem is always well received and there are many different ones to be found on the internet.

One of our favourites is…..

Dear Guests

We haven’t got a wedding list

The reasons we’ll explain

It’s to save you all the hassle

As shopping is a pain

We’ve lived together quite a while

And all the bills are paid

We’ve got our pots and pans

Our plans have all been made

We know it’s not traditional

It’s not the way it’s done

But instead of a wedding list

We’d like a bit of sun

So if you’d like to give a gift

To help us celebrate

Some money for a honeymoon

We would appreciate

Further info: for example directions or a map, local accommodation, local taxis and parking.

Etiquette wise, invitations are sent 3-5 months before the big day.
